VIPER4Android Installation And Set Up Guide

What you will need for VIPER4Android:

The App itself:

You can download the latest official APK of VIPER4Android here:

Alternatively, a direct link is usually common:

The APK to download for your version of Android  is clearly marked - make sure you get the right one.

IRS Impulse Response Sample files - this is where the magic happens:

I’m providing a zip file containing some “Dolby IRS” files I use and that works very well - download and extract this:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw4IPFHUFpo7M0tDaklueHRibXM/view?usp=sharing

There are other IRS files available (search XDA Developers forums) and once you’ve placed the folder on your device to put them all in (I’ll explain that later) you can simply put the .irs files in that folder and try them out to see how they affect the sound output.

See here for more IRS files to try out:

SELinux Mode Changer:

Busybox On Rails:

Optional but highly recommended app:

ES File Explorer File Manager

Installation:

  1. Install ES File Explorer File Manager from the Play Store:

  1. Install SELinux Mode Changer from the Play Store:

  1. Install (but don’t run/open just yet) the VIPER4Android App APK from whichever source you choose.

  1. Download the provided Dolby IRS .zip file from the link above if you haven’t already and extract the whole folder within it to the root folder of your device. i.e. the VIPER4Android folder should sit alongside folders like DCIM, Download, Android, etc depending on your device.

Inside the VIPER4Android folder is a “Kernel” folder and this is where you need to put any and all .irs files you want to try out in the VIPER4Android app. Ideally get a whole bunch to test out and put them in here before proceeding with this guide.

The set-up:

Check/Fix/Install Busybox:

  1. Open the Busybox on Rails App.
  2. Grant superuser permissions when prompted
  3. Select “Cleanup & Install” under Operation and “Normal” under Method
  4. Tap the INSTALL button
  5. System Status should say: OK

SELinux Mode:

Note: This step was necessary on my Nexus 5 using VIPER4Android 2.3.3.0. It may not be necessary for you or with the newest 2.3.4.0 version and there are apparently negative security implications of setting SELinux to PERMISSIVE so this is up to you and at your own risk from a security point of view. Without it, you may not be able to install VIPER4Android at all. Personally, I’m fine with it.

  1. Load up SELinux Mode Changer, grant superuser permissions when prompted by your root app and then:

  1. Change SELinux mode to PERMISSIVE by tapping the button if the option is available.

  1. Or if the PERMISSIVE button is already greyed out then just exit out of the app -  as it is already in permissive mode.

VIPER4Android Driver Installation:

  1. Load up the VIPER4Android app.
  2. When prompted, agree to install the VIPER4Android driver - tap Yes.
  3. Choose High Audio Quality or Super Audio Quality. I use Super.
  4. Reboot your device when prompted.

Now the fun begins! (VIPER4Android Set-up):

Tip: Be careful with the volume level when playing around with the settings in the app as the IRS setting using the Dolby Pro Logic 1.irs makes the volume considerably louder than normal.

Tip: If you dislike the increase in volume, you can adjust the Output Gain setting right at the bottom of the settings to a minus number that suits you.

Open the VIPER4Android App and tap the menu dots at the top right or go into the menu, choose UI setting and then choose “Expert”.

**Make sure you are on the Headset page of settings for now (swipe all the way to the left).**

Settings I use and recommend (unless otherwise stated, left at default/off):

  • Enable Spectrum extension: Strength 0.5
  • Enable Convolver: Choose: Dolby Pro Logic II 1.irs
  • Enable ViPER Clarity: Mode Natural: Select Clarity 8.0 dB

For Spotify (for example) to output sound using VIPER4Android and possibly other music apps you will need to tap the menu dots (or go into the menu) then tap “FX Compatible Mode” and then choose “Compatible” then you may need to restart Spotify or your music app.

For other music Apps, you may need to change the FX Compatible Mode and then restart the music App. It’s trial and error. It’s also a bit of a pain but it seems to be “just the way it is”.

I highly recommend loading up your music/audio app and starting some music playing. Then go through the settings one by one in VIPER4Android and test what works best for your preference.

Tip: If you find that audio doesn’t seem to be going through (processed by) VIPER4Android at any point after it was previously working then just tap “previous track” in whatever audio/music app you’re using to reload the track you're listening to and it should come through again. VIPER4Android is sometimes a bit quirky like that.

Hopefully, following this guide, you’ve managed to set up VIPER4Android and get it all working and see what all the fuss is about.

Remember, there’s a massive amount of personal preference in terms of how people like their audio/music to sound so just have a play around with the settings and see what works for you.

NOTES on settings:

Force Enable V4A: Supposedly drains battery, provides little benefit than I can see. Does not “fix” the issue of needing to switch between Compatible and Normal modes between apps (FX Compatible Mode in settings)

FIREqualizer: Most of what this provides is got by using the Dolby IRS file so I don’t see any need for enabling it and over-doing the processing.

PlaybackAGC: Not too useful for most music and seems to over-do the compression but can be very useful for spoken word or audiobooks to level out the volume (normalise). Usually 2x or 3x is enough. Not quite as useful when used with Dolby IRS (use sparingly).

TIP: PlaybackAGC is great for use with Bluetooth speakers too - try this on the Bluetooth Device “page” in the App. 2x probably enough. Go easy though - your speakers may not handle it if you over do this.

Cross Channel: Seems to “flesh out” the sound a bit - fuller but personally prefer it set to 0 Percent (off).

VIPER-DDC: Might be useful if your listening device is listed. Mine isn’t and I don’t use this. Try it, see how you like it.

Most of the “surround” settings are not very useful in my opinion - as always - personal preference.

VIPER Bass: Completely up to you and will most likely depend heavily on what ear/headphones you have.

VIPER Clarity: Great stuff - I love sound that’s got nice treble. Use sparingly, but definitely works very well as intended.

Cure Tech+: Seemingly filters sound through a binaural system to reduce auditory impact of sound waves on ear drum. Probably works quite well but definitely degraded sound output i.e. not really optimal for enjoyment unless you can get used to it. Reduces treble noticeably so no point using with VIPER Clarity.
